Rochdale have signed goalkeeper David Lucas as a player-coach for the upcoming season on a one-year deal. The 33-year-old had also been on trial at Preston as he looked to relocate back nearer the north west.

Manager Steve Eyre told the club website: "David has been with us for long periods over pre-season and we like him very much.

"We are looking to use his knowledge in a coaching role as well as playing an active part in the squad."

Lucas, who was released by Swindon earlier this year, has formerly played at Leeds, Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday, Scunthorpe and Darlington after beginning his career as a trainee at Preston.

He will provide competition to Jake Kean, who signed on a season-long loan from Blackburn, as well as working with all the goalkeepers at Spotland.
