A double from Rochdale leading scorer Grant Holt booked his side's passage into the second round and heaped further misery on Oxford boss Graham Rix.

In a totally one-sided game, the visitors took lead against the run of play after 22 minutes when former Manchester City striker Lee Bradbury latched on to a hopeful ball forward and went past Matt Gilks before rolling the ball into the empty net.

The home side drew level 16 minutes later when Holt looped a header from an Alan Goodall cross over the head of stranded Oxford keeper Chris Tardif.

The second half saw almost incessant home pressure with Tardif making a series of saves, and it looked like being an afternoon of fustration until Holt popped up in the 90th minute to fire home his 12th goal of the season following a goalmouth scramble.
